This class is more challenging because we will be expecting more from the dogs now that they understand all of the commands on-leash and are nearly perfect on-leash, even around heavy distractions.  All of the exercises covered in the beginner obedience class will be practiced and perfected using step-by-step techniques to gain total, reliable off-leash control.

The advanced classes are for families who want a dog who is better trained than most other dogs they know. While the beginner class teaches on-leash control and manners, this class goes a step further by teaching the dog to obey commands at an increased distance. Attention exercises are introduced in this class. The goal at the end of this class is for the dog to be reliable on all exercises off-leash.

If you are interested in your dog becoming a certified Therapy Dog, this class will help you to achieve that goal. Throughout the class, introduction and practice is done with wheelchairs, crutches, walkers, etc. so your dog gets used to working around all that equipment and prepares you for the Therapy Dog test. Therapy Dogs must be good with people of all ages and other dogs. All of the exercises taught in the Beginner Class and the Advanced Class will fully prepare you to PASS the Therapy Dog test and allow you to share your well-behaved, controlled dog in hospitals, nursing homes, schools, assisted living facilities, etc. The rewards are numerous when you can put a smile on someone’s face just by a visit with your dog.

For those so inclined, this course can also further prepare you to enter AKC Obedience Trials, Agility, Flyball or any off-leash activity with your dog. If you are interested in participating in AKC events and your dog is purebred but does not have AKC papers, you can apply to the AKC for an ILP (Indefinite Listing Privilege) number. This simply requires you to supply the AKC with as much information that you have on your dog and 2 pictures. They will then issue you a number which allows you to compete in ANY AKC sanctioned event except for Conformation (judging your dog on its’ looks). Ask your instructor for an ILP form. Your dog can also be spayed or neutered to compete in any AKC event except for conformation.
